Categories

  • Category A — Primary: age 10–12
  • Category B — Secondary: age 13–17

Age is counted on 31 December 2026. Open to government, aided, private and international schools in Malaysia and abroad. Individual entry with one accompanying teacher; no prior experience needed. Schools may enter more than one pupil.

How to take part

  1. 1. Register for Edufest

The accompanying teacher signs in with Google and registers the school contingent. Student entry is free.

  2. 2. Enter the pupil

In the School Panel, enter one pupil in the Paper Plane Challenge. Schools may enter more than one pupil.

  3. 3. Complete pupil details

Add date of birth and class, teacher and emergency contacts, confidential access needs, learning sources and the integrity declaration.

  4. 4. Fold and throw on the day

Check in, receive the briefing and your coded A4 sheet, build in 10 minutes, take one practice throw and three official throws.

Fold & fly

  • One uniform A4 80 g/m² sheet from the organiser, marked with your participant code. Planes made in advance are not accepted.
  • 10 minutes to build, folding only. A blunt plastic ruler may be used to crease folds; no tearing, cutting, glue, tape, clips, staples, coatings, wetting or weights.
  • One practice throw, then 2 minutes to adjust folds; three official throws with the same plane and up to 1 minute of adjustment between throws.
  • Throw with one hand from behind the line, no launcher. Feet must not touch or cross the line on release; stay behind it until told to move.
  • Indoor marked lane with no fans blowing toward it. Lane length, width and throwing zone are announced before the session.

How it is judged

Main measure

Longest valid distance of the three official throws

First tie-break

Second-longest valid distance

Second tie-break

Third-longest valid distance; if still tied, places are shared

Distance is measured in metres, perpendicular from the throw line to the first floor contact, rounded down to the full centimetre. Sliding or bouncing afterwards does not count. No percentage marks. A throw is void if the line is crossed, it hits a person or obstacle before the floor, or first contact is outside the lane (side lines count as inside). Pupils with no valid throw are not ranked.

Integrity & safety

  • Fold and throw yourself. Learning existing designs beforehand is allowed; AI may be used for learning before the event only.
  • No notes, phones, tutorial videos or coaching during building, practice or official throws. Teachers may not fold, throw or give instructions.
  • Follow the judge's signal. Never throw toward people or out of turn; only officers retrieve planes after first contact is marked.
  • Paper damaged before practice can be replaced with the same build time. Verified outside interference voids that throw and allows a repeat; pupil errors do not.
  • Provisional results are displayed first; teachers may lodge a written appeal with evidence within 15 minutes.

Awards

Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up per category. Prize values and certificate eligibility will be announced officially. Results appear on the Edufest results page and count toward school points and e-certificates.

The registration closing date and link, session dates and specific location, lane length and width, contact details, prize values, certificate eligibility and record retention period are pending official confirmation.
